UN CERTAIN ETAT DU MONDE? A CERTAIN STATE OF THE WORLD?

Works from the François Pinault Foundation

March 19 - June 14, 2009

The François Pinault Foundation has one of the world’s largest and most important collections of contemporary art. Representing 32 artists, this major exhibition of works from the collection brought contemporary art to Moscow on an unprecedented scale.

François Pinault is one of the world’s leading private art collectors, twice named by ArtReview magazine as “the most influential figure in contemporary art”. The François Pinault Foundation Collection comprises more than 2,000 works by leading contemporary artists, and this exhibition brought a wide selection of them to Moscow for the first time.

The show arranged work into themes reflecting global concerns and the challenges of the new century. The first two parts explored war and humanity and aspects of spectacle and the leisure society, while the third took a world view with artists from America, Europe, Asia, India, and the Middle East.

Taking over most of the 8,500 square meters of the Garage building, the exhibition represented the work of 32 artists, including Jeff Koons, Bill Viola, Dan Flavin, Maurizio Cattelan, Cindy Sherman, Tim Noble and Sue Webster, Subodh Gupta, Philippe Parreno, Takashi Murakami, and Peter Fischli and David Weiss.
