JAMES MEYER
Shadow
7 March - 27 April 2013

GERING & LóPEZ GALLERY is pleased to present JAMES MEYER, Shadow, an exhibition of recent sculptural works. This will be the artist’s fourth one-person exhibition with the gallery.

The works in Shadow are a continuation of a theme the artist has made central to his work for many years. The focus of recent paintings, drawings and now dynamic wall sculptures has been the romantic idea of unstructured and unsupervised downtime. This world is peaceful and bucolic, filled with children enjoying the singular pleasures of outdoor games, shimmering sunny weather, and simple acts of discovery. This type of activity is seen as almost old-fashioned today, given the preponderance of computer games and multimedia distractions. The act of doing nothing is seen as quaint, in a time where hyperactivity and multitasking are the norm. In Meyer’s world, this retro-focus is comforting; time stretches out to become timeless, and by extension, sacred.

James Meyer began exhibiting work in New York’s East Village in 1982; progressing through the downtown art scene while being included in various exhibitions at venues such as White Columns, Danceteria, The New Museum and the East Village stalwart Pat Hearn Gallery. He has been exhibiting with Sandra Gering Gallery since 1992, beginning at the Broome Street gallery. Shadow is his first exhibition with Gering & López at the Fifth Avenue location.
