EXTRACT - Young Art Prize
06 Dec 2013 - 26 Jan 2014
EXTRACT at Kunstforeningen GL STRAND, Copenhagen, is your chance to discover what is new and exciting in art right now! We have Again this year invited seven of the most talented and promising artists in Europe, who have recently graduated, to participate in their first big international group exhibition. One of the seven artists will be awarded the EXTRACT PRIZE of 50,000 DKK by an international jury. The winner is also granted a solo show in GL STRAND.
This year DR KULTURKLUBBER will be hosting the audience prize. Vote for your favourite art work and decide which artist wins the honour of engaging in a collaboration with the audience on a joint art project.
Over the last three years the award has played a significant role in provoking debate about visual art and promoting public interest in contemporary art. EXTRACT is made in collaboration with The Obel Family Foundation, which supports the exhibition, the solo show and the art prize through a 3-year commitment. The Obel Family Foundation shows great generosity by supporting the young contemporary art scene,
which we are grateful to be a part of in GL STRAND.
With the concept of EXTRACT, GL STRAND aims to showcase, celebrate and communicate the work of young artists in an international context. In EXTRACT all the artists are able to experiment freely as they are given at least one exhibition space each. Along with the vernissage and accompanying artist talks, the
exhibition promotes young international art to the general public.
Dealing with several different themes, the participating artists work in a variety of media and expressions. From the exploration of picturesque Sourthern Germany to erosive sculptures and the testing of gravity, the public will experience a wide range of new art works. The artists share a common effort to challenge
the traditional materials and experiment with their own aesthetics. Also, the continuous challenge of conventional narrative structures is a common feature in the works of all the participating artists.
The participating artists of EXTRACT are:
Birgitte Martinsen (DK), Laurits Nymand Svendsen (DK), Niels Pugholm (DK), Åsa Frankenberg (SE), Mollie Anna King (IRL), Lydia Nsiah (AU) and Natalia Zaluska (PL).
All the artists have recently graduated from some of the best art academies in Europe, respectively The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Funen Art Academy, The Jutland Art Academy, Slade School of Fine Art in London and Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna. The artists have been chosen to participate
in EXTRACT on the basis of their graduation projects.
Jury: Artist Michael Elmgreen, director of Bonniers Konsthall in Stockholm, Sara Arrhenius, Chief Curator of BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, Laurence Sillars and director of GL STRAND, Helle Behrndt.
