TOVE JANSSON
Art, Love & Moomins
10 June - 3 September 2017
For the first time in Denmark, GL STRAND presents a major exhibition of the works and life of Tove Jansson (1914-2001). Tove Jansson is world famous as the creator of one of the most beloved children’s universes in the Nordic countries – the Moomins. However, Tove Jansson’s work goes far beyond the Moomins and Tove Jansson was a painter, writer, and illustrator. Today she is regarded as one of Finland’s central modernist artists.
The exhibition at GL STRAND presents a multi-facetted portrait of Tove Jansson’s highly productive life through her diverse works. It includes Tove Jansson’s early surrealist paintings from the 1930s, the modernist and experimental works from the 1940s and 50s, and her lyrical works from the 1960s and 1970s. It will also show Tove Jansson's satirical anti-war illustrations and illustrations for comics and children’s books, material that emphasises Tove Jansson’s private life, and in particular her extensive work with the Moomins, in drawings, figures and photographs.
The exhibition provides an overall presentation of her wide-ranging work, in which tolerance, curiosity and joie de vivre are the unifying characteristics.
The exhibition is created by Ateneum Finnish Art Gallery in co-operation with Kunstforeningen GL STRAND.
