Martin van Zomeren is pleased to open its new location with ‘Candid Etui’, a solo show of Alexandra Leykauf.

The exhibitions combines Dutch and Flemish landscape paintings and interiors with carpets.

The early period of landscape paintings, where the landscape evolves from simple background to central subject, coincides with the diffusion in Europe of exotic carpets coming from colonies. Originally carpets were meant to remodel the oriental garden, becoming displaceable, mobile pieces of land. In the photos chosen by the artist the carpet is decontextualized, but brought one step closer to an imaginary landscape: it is rigorously shown in perspective allowing an otherwise absent image space.

Representing the already represented, the work of Alexandra Leykauf reveals the fact that each image can open up to many perspectives and readings. Photographing found images, instead of scanning them, she makes the reproduction process visible, showing an otherwise invisible space beyond the image. Hand coloring photos, she gets closer to the image and gives it a new life.
