”Cut-Out”

Martin van Zomeren is pleased to present ‘Cut-Out’, an exhibition of new works by Praneet Soi. For his third solo exhibition in the gallery, Soi presents his archive of images composed as cut out collages, together with paintings and a mural. The installation places an emphasis on the ongoing archive project which has became the starting point for the artist’s work, a means for him to mark out his physical, cultural and political environment. This on-going archive is inspired, among others, by Abby Warburg’s archive, as well as Gerhard Richter’s Atlas.
Soi has been exploring representations of war, specifically images coming out from what is labeled as terrorism, in an attempt to see how such imagery has affected the way we might look at our own environment. The landscape and portraiture are addressed through this lens and the viewer gradually begins to make connections and associations as he or she views the collages with the mural and the paintings.
Praneet Soi (b. 1971, Calcutta) lives and works between Amsterdam and Calcutta. He received his BA& MA at the M.S. University, Baroda and his second MFA at the University of California at San Diego (2001). He was selected to attend the Skowhegan residency program and was an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam (2002- 2003). Recent solo presentations include Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven (Het Oog, 2009), and ‘Bird in Hand’, Project 88, Mumbai (with Carlos Amorales, 2008) and the 7th Gwangju Biennial, South Korea (2008). Upcoming projects include the 3rd Riwaq Biennial, Ramallah, Palestine (upcoming, 2009) and CACSA
Adelaide, Australia (upcoming, 2010).
