DAVID KOLOANE
After a five year absence, an exhibition of recent work by David Koloane opens on May 31st 2008 at the Goodman Gallery. The exhibition entitled Revival follows the recent conferring of an honorary doctorate on the artist by the Vaal University of Technology, which also coincides with his seventieth birthday.
In Revival Koloane continues his exploration of urban spaces and its diverse inhabitants. The artist has employed a variety of techniques and has introduced a bold palette to fathom the urban mystique. The work ranges from large portraits of urban dwellers, titled Ordinary Faces, to dark claustrophobic nooks and crannies under a neon glare.
The sound of dogs can be heard in the distance and as dawn breaks the artist ventures into the cacophony of traffic in the urban sprawl.
The grime and detritus, with smoky pollution swirling through the city and scrounging birds fleeting around in circles are all captured in Koloane's oeuvre. The work takes the viewer on a visual journey of the seemingly mundane rituals in a metropolis.
The artist was born in Alexandra Township on 5th June 1938 and trained under the artist Bill Ainslie with fellow students such as William Kentridge, Gail Behrmann and then tutor Ricky Burnett. David Koloane taught at the FUBA Academy as head of the Fine Art Section and later as the curator of the now defunct FUBA Gallery. The artist has sat on several provincial and national visual arts structures such as the National Arts Council.
This exhibition will open on Saturday 31st May at noon, and closes on the 21st of June 2008.
