Faux Amis

Galerija Gregor Podnar is pleased to announce Anne Neukamp‘s exhibition Faux Amis.
In her second exhibition at Galerija Gregor Podnar in Berlin Anne Neukamp continues to destabilise the viewer’s perception by creating unusual situations which are stretched between reality and illusion. The two main elements of the exhibition are paintings and works on paper which register the artist’s dedicated and tireless research of the contemporary visual imagery that surround us. The exhibited works can be seen as a logical continuation of her practice; Anne Neukamp introduces a new expression with which she tries to encourage the viewer to reconstruct forms and images, “non-materialized found objects” into a palpable new form.
The relation between individual works within the exhibition express a condition which emerges within them and a suspense between the images that we recognise and images that lie at the edge of our recognition– images that can be easily translated into a new and complex multi-layered structure. The surface of Anne Neukamp’s work implies a journey in time and space, dense with metaphors that speak to the individual’s attempt to find a way out of the mundane accumulation of forms, images and objects. For the viewer it is akin to the state of being trapped in the symbolic space between monochrome backgrounds and surreal abstract and figurative forms, while for Anne Neukamp this is an attempt to create a space for a new reflection on the experience, existence and transience of the medium of painting. Her indefatigable examination of the medium, rooted in different visual premises, is inevitably connected to her individual poetics, which is projected through small, almost invisible mistakes hidden in the surface of the exhibited works. As already proposed by the exhibition title, we can see the show as a visual paraphrase of a linguistic term, in which images look similar, but differ significantly in meaning– something that creates instant disturbance and directly challenges the viewer’s perception.
In this sense, the exhibition Faux Amis imposes itself like a disturbance among the landscape of contemporary imagery, while Anne Neukamp rigorously demonstrates her success in developing a unique visual language, which today combines a specific tradition of painting with the requirements of the contemporary, while also consistently questioning the latter precisely through her own position.
Anne Neukamp was born in Düsseldorf in 1976. She lives and works in Berlin.
Her work was recently shown in solo exhibitions at Greta Meert Gallery (Brussels, 2014), Galerie Chez Valentin (Paris 2014), Agustina Ferreyra (San Juan, 2014), Kunstverein Oldenburg (2013), Wilhelm-Hack Museum (Ludwigshafen, 2012). Her works were also included in recent group shows at Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York, Columbia University, New York, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin and Kai10 Arthena Foundation, Düsseldorf.
