Galerija Gregor Podnar is pleased to announce its second solo exhibition of Marzena Nowak in Berlin.
The exhibition um presents a visual encounter with the artist’s most recent production through a selection of works using various media.
The work of Marzena Nowak is rooted in memory and imagination, residing somewhere in the tension between autobiographical reference and poetically immersed, dreamlike worlds. The artist’s sensitivity to discrete everyday events and her relation to her own physicality often offer thematic starting points for her artistic practice. The exhibition um especially focuses on the subject of historical connotations. This is most humorously expressed in the video work Brezniewowka (2012): two Soviet cartoon figures are placed into Brezhnev’s back room of the Palace of Culture in Warsaw, which in the 50s was built in hour of the Polish-Soviet friendship. The title of the exhibition um is a German word that describes rather an indefinite state than a clear meaning as if one tries to re-construction memory.
Warsaw-based artist Marzena Nowak has been exhibited internationally since 2003, taking part in such shows as “Absolute Generations” within the 50th Venice Biennial (2003), “Interrupted Connections” at Zacheta (National Gallery of Art) in Warsaw (2006), or “Museum der Wünsche” at Mumok in Vienna (2011). She also showed her work in 2007 at Dvir Gallery, Tel Aviv, and presented solo exhibitions at the Galerie Mezzanin, Vienna in 2008 and 2011) and, in 2009, both at Konrad Fischer Galerie in Düsseldorf and Galerija Gregor Podnar in Berlin, and in 2011 at Salzburger Kunstverein and in the Centre of Contemporary Art in Torun.
