ANNE EASTMAN
"The Intention of the Device"

27 August – 3 October 2009

Claudia Groeflin Galerie is pleased to present the third solo exhibition of Anne Eastman (b.1973) with the gallery. The artist is known for abstract video works and, more recently, mirrored mobiles – carefully balanced objects made of mirrors suspended in stained wooden frames, hung near patterned fabric. These mobiles are both, self-contained artworks and inter-relating components of installations combining video and sculpture. The result is a fragmented, multi-mediated experience luring you into an intricate web of space and movement, presence and absence. The ever-changing views of the mobiles are an important topic of Eastman’s work as only their surroundings and even more the visitor’s presence complete them.

A Record of Abstract Ideas (2009) highlights this interaction, when Eastman uses video footage from a previous exhibition showing a similar setup. As the anticipation to spot yourself unfolds, you begin to reflect on the identity of gallery spaces but also the notion of a continuous exhibiting practice.

The Yale Museum’s African Art Collection is the vantage point for The Intention of the Device (2009). Eastman installed mirrors, which, through their slow rotation, allows glimpses of masks and maps. The reflections present a gaze that is constantly shifting.
