A pioneer and one of the main representatives of performance art in Spain, Esther Ferrer (b. 1937, Donostia/San Sebastián) started to participate in the activities of the ZAJ Group with Walter Marchetti, Ramon Barce, and Juan Hidalgo in 1967, and since then, has made action art her main medium, even though in the 1970s she went back to creating staged photographs, installations, paintings based on series of prime numbers or ∏, objects, etc. Her oeuvre is a part of the Minimalist and Conceptual Art movement, which began during the 1960s with Stéphane Mallarmé, Georges Perec, John Cage, or Fluxus as its leading figures, as well as of the feminist movements of the time.
