SELECTIONS FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM BILBAO III
20 November 2012 – Fall 2013

Selections from the Collection of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao III is the third in a series of exhibitions planned for 2009 to 2013 featuring a selection of works from the Guggenheim Bilbao Collection, which currently comprises 124 works by 70 artists. This presentation will feature one of the main areas of the Guggenheim Bilbao Collection: pop art. A selection of works by Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, Gilbert & George, Sigmar Polke, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jean-Michel Basquiat will spotlight not only members of the pop movement but also artists who represent the pop legacy or have had a conceptual or biographical relationship with this historic trend.

These works from the Guggenheim Bilbao Collection are set in context and share the gallery space with works of video and film art by Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Gilbert & George on loan from other collections. The interaction between the moving image and two-dimensional formats allows visitors to appreciate a sense of the complexity of the respective artistic practices. Together with these works, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao will present one of the Museum's most recent acquisitions, the Smiles series (1994) by Alex Katz, consisting of 11 large-format portraits of women painted in his signature flat style.
