Drawing a close to a 15-year phase of artistic activity, Ulrike Grossarth reunites several impulses of her work in this exhibition, while simultaneously transforming them into a new project. The exhibition space is divided into four thematic areas that are empirically connected to one another. The first section, the result of a discursive method, is composed of Bau I (Building I), the final version of which was shown at documenta X. A reconstruction of Marcel Broodthaers’ Salle Blanche is erected in the second section - without its original textual surface - inside which Grossarth has arranged a Museum der Väter (Museum of the Fathers). This work reflects Grossarth’s conscious confrontation with her male predecessors and role models Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte and Marcel Broodthaers, as well as their »legacy« of a conceptual approach to art. An interactive workshop on artistic methods of experimental environments (»public exercises«) is located in the third section of the exhibition. The final section is devoted to Ulrike Grossarth’s treatment of the great pictorial atlas of the French Enlightenment, the well-known encyclopedia by Denis Diderot and Jean Baptiste le Rond d’Alembert from 1751. For the artist, it represents a »technical mentality study,« »in which causal thinking and actions are imparted.«
