HOUSEGUEST: GABBIANI

February 15 - May 24, 2009

Los Angeles-based artist Francesca Gabbiani selects an eclectic range of works on paper for the next Houseguest exhibition, a new series of artist-curated shows. Gabbiani chooses to explore the subjects of witchcraft and sorcery, themes that are often subtly evoked in her own work. For this project, she has browsed through the boxes of the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts with an eye for mysterious and macabre images, but also in search for representations of unearthly figures like fairies and elves. The works selected include drawings, prints, and illustrated books ranging in date from the Renaissance to the present. Gabbiani proposes a personal and highly intriguing interpretation of the powers of magic and spells.
