This exhibition celebrates recent acquisitions to the collection of UCLA’s Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts and honors the many donors and supporters who have made possible the growth of this distinguished archive. The exhibition presents a wide variety of historical and contemporary works drawn from the collection, which focuses on European, American, and Japanese prints, drawings, photographs, and artists’ books from the Renaissance to the present day. Founded in 1956 with an initial gift from Fred Grunwald, the collection has grown to encompass over 45,000 works on paper. Recently acquired works shown in this exhibition include engravings and etchings by such European Renaissance masters as Albrecht Dürer, Daniel Hopfer, and Diana Scultori; a rare mezzotint proof by nineteenth-century British artist John Martin and a lithograph by visionary French artist Rodolphe Bresdin; a platinum print photograph by Edward Sheriff Curtis; important drawings by Milton Avery, Edward Burne-Jones, Fernand Léger, and Amedeo Modigliani; and prints by twentieth-century master Pablo Picasso. A diverse selection of prints by contemporary artists includes major works by Vija Celmins, Sue Coe, Julie Mehretu, Laura Owens, Ed Ruscha, Richard Serra, Kiki Smith, and Terry Winters.
