ONE HUNDRED PEOPLE SAY UMBRELLA
audio recordings, lectures and talks, performances
28 October 2015 - April 2016

The Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof is currently focusing on visual artists who work with many different media in their installations, particularly those who employ audio elements – whether as a conceptual strategy, material or narrative means. As part of these exhibitions, which include artists such as Hannah Weinberger and Ruth Buchanan, the artists produce an LP that is released by the Cologne-based record label Apparent Extent. The relationship between each sound recording and exhibition ranges from documentary, to autonomous, to identical.

With this in mind, the Kunstverein will be temporarily transforming its lounge into a space for audio releases made by visual artists. The selection will also include recordings from other areas, such as music, as the products of mutual inspiration or artistic collaboration.

Historical recordings from various public and private collections and art institutions as well as current releases from book publishers, labels and publishers of limited audio editions will be presented. The room will feature a comprehensive collection of recorded materials, testifying to the fact that sound recording media have never completely gone away, but are instead constantly growing (we only have to look at the current interest in vinyl records), while also exploring sound itself, regardless of media format.

This collection will enable visitors to access many historical and contemporary works on cassette, CD, video, dubplate and vinyl. At the same time, not only the history and role of audio recordings, but also sound and its dependency on recording media within the context of art will be discussed in several panels. The programme will also include an ongoing exhibition of Ruth Buchanan's works at the Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof as well as live performances and concerts at Kampnagel, a venue for contemporary performing arts in Hamburg, Germany.

The collection is realized with kind support by different artists, institutions, editions or labels and consists of loans from:
