"ZES"
CHRIS EVANS, GERMAINE KRUIP, JIMMY ROBERT, KAREN SARGSYAN, MAAIKE SCHOOREL, GUIDO VAN DER WERVE
Harris Lieberman is pleased to present Zes, an exhibition of six artists whose work has been shaped by the culture and environment of the Netherlands. Though this is not a “Dutch art show,” all of the artists in the exhibition have some connection to the Netherlands. Moreover, Zes evokes the creative energy of a specific place in the present moment, and highlights the fluidity and exchange between the contemporary art scene in Holland and the international art community.
British-born artist Chris Evans lives and works in London and Berlin, and completed a Scottish Visual Arts Residency in Amsterdam in 2004. Working in a range of media including painting, sculpture, and installation, Evans uses the stories and experiences of individuals as a basis for his artwork.
Germaine Kruip lives and works in Amsterdam, and completed a residency at the Rijksakademie in 2001. Working in sculpture and installation, Kruip creates subtle interventions in public spaces and explores the formal qualities of the natural world.
Guadeloupe-born, Belgium-based artist Jimmy Robert creates performances, films, and two-dimensional wall installations inspired by physical movement and gesture. He completed a residency at the Rijksakademie in 2005.
Karen Sargsyan was born in Armenia, and currently lives and works in Amsterdam. His cut-paper installations and sculptures evoke theatrical scenarios and reference art historical compositions. He is currently an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie.
Maaike Schoorel’s portrait paintings address the formal qualities of light, color, and movement, using a fractured perspective to depict her subjects. Inspired by classical painters, Schoorel’s canvases explore the ephemeral nature of memory. The artist completed her MA at the Royal College of Art in 2001, and currently lives and works in London and Amsterdam.
Guido van der Werve’s poetic videos conflate the ubiquity of ordinary life with the illusory imagery of dreams and fairytales. Using classical music to imbue his scenes with a range of moods and tones, the artist presents imagery that is at once haunting, beautiful, and at times, even humorous. He is currently in residency at the Rijksakademie.
