Out Riding Feet

The artists of the exhibition – Anna Barriball, Miriam Böhm, Ellen Phelan, Sasha Rossman, Nora Schultz, Sophie-Therese Trenka-Dalton and Claudia Wieser – share neither age, nor context, nor intention. Instead, Saunders identifies a common strategy: an unexpected use of format, which summons tension between anticipated meaning and the resulting object. Ranging from painted objects made and shown by Phelan in the 1970s to found and altered photographs by Barriball or the Xeroxed magazines of Schultz, the works in the show hinge on this relationship. This can be as concrete as a painting and the surface on which it is painted, or as abstract as a bit of research and how it gets embodied. These artists find ways to mis-use their supports, crossing wires and confounding the relationship of an image or idea and the structure that bears it, all the while mixing up materials or purposes (separating the "weight" from what "carries" it) in a manner that is matter-of-fact, open-ended, and ultimately productive.
