Open until the end - Marwan, a retrospective in eleven acts
16 Aug - 06 Sep 2009
Since 1957, the painter Marwan, born in Damascus, has lived and worked in Berlin. The recurring theme of his work is the intimate encounter of the other as well as of oneself. His figurations stimulate reflection on the fleetingness of life. Heads are dissolved in scintillating face-landscapes. All doubt, all fear surfaces in the stream of time. Under the succinct, flowing brushstroke, often using muted colour, layer upon layer, bodies merge into bodies. They change imperceptibly, remain elusive and open until the end.
