Susanne Rottenbacher

16 Jan - 10 Feb 2018

Born in 1969 in Göttingen, Rottenbacher first studied stage design at Columbia University in New York. She then continued her studies in London at the Bartlett School of Architecture and Planning with the new focus of light design. After numerous commissions as stage and light designer Rottenbacher turned to fine art in 2004.

In her first artistic endeavours Rottenbacher produced lightboxes combining abstract painting with elements of light and timing devices. The result was a choreography of coloured lines made of light, which she continues to pursue with great intensity and success to this day. The colourfully accentuated panes of acrylic glass she employs are the carriers of coloured LED-bands that appear as glowing three-dimensional drawings in the dark. By daylight the carriers develop a sculptural quality. Depending on vantage point and time of day, the works change from one instance to the next. In any case they allow the viewers to immerse themselves in a multi-faceted, impressive world of “light painting”.
