Land Art to 1974

"Ends of the Earth" is the first large-scale, historical-thematic exhibition on Land Art. It documents the impulses that simultaneously came from various disciplines in the 1960s, and focused on using the earth as an artistic medium and exhibiting works in remote locations far from the usual art context. The exhibition highlights the early years of artistic experimentation and ends with the mid-1970s, before Land Art became an established genre. It ignores the romanticizing "back to nature" and "flight from civilization" movements; instead, it provides a comprehensive overview of the complexity of the artists' social and political commitment in the historical context of the time.
"Ends of the Earth" exposes Land Art as both a media practice and sculptural discipline: Language, photography, film, and television play a central role in the creation of Land Art. More than 80 artists from Great Britain, Japan, Israel, Eastern and Northern Europe, as well as North and South America, are represented in the show.
