the american artist william eggleston (*1938) is one of the most idiosyncratic photographers of the 20th century. with his concept of the ‘democratic camera’, which essentially declares every motif to be worthy of depicting, he revolutionised contemporary photography since the end of the 60s. his colour images detach themselves time and again from simple representations and thereby achieve additional layers of meaning. His snapshot-like images have influenced several younger photographers and meanwhile they also enjoy cult status with film directors.
