Chila Kumari Burman was brought up in Liverpool and educated at the Slade School of Art in London. She has worked experimentally across printmaking, painting, sculpture, photography and video since the mid 1980s.
Drawing on fine and pop art imagery, she explores Asian femininity, her personal family history and questions of post-colonial identity in intricate multi-layered works. These are informed by popular culture, Bollywood, fashion and found objects.
Her work is held in a number of public and private collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Wellcome Trust in London, and the Devi Foundation in New Delhi.
