ANNA MÖLLER / BJÖRN BENEDITZ
"meet you at the statue in an hour"
04.02. – 06.03.2010, Opening 04.02.2010 at 7 pm
Hermes und der Pfau is pleased to announce the exhibition “Meet you at the statue in an hour” by Anna Möller (*1982) and Björn Beneditz (*1978). The installation, created by the two Hamburg based artists in a joint effort, alters the physical perception of the exhibition space through an arrangement of bamboo bars hanging down from the ceiling in the shape of a stage-like course.
The central theme of the work lies in the effect of light and shadow caused by the field of transparent bars with its interspace between the walls of black painted bamboo – employed as separating elements – repositioning the typical division of up and down, inside and outside to a secondary level of perception for the viewer.
Thus an architectural landscape is created with regards to the
conditions of the room, which on the one hand seems strictly geometric and on the other organically nature-like due to the natural growth of the bamboo. Integrated into the setting of the exhibition space – predetermined by the bars – are individual pieces of work by Möller and Benditz functioning like an additional commentary system. Based on the space allocation plans of contructivism, the stage drafts by Moholy-Nagy or the Merz building by Schwitters, these elements merge with the secret society’s gestures on the invitation card and Möller’s sculpturally folded collages into an incalculable overlay and agglomeration of signs, whose referential system is only revealed to the public in fragments.
Anna Möller was born in Hamburg in 1980 and studied at Hamburg’s Hochschule für bildende Künste from 2003 to 2009. She currently holds a scholarship at Villa Romana in Florence. Anna Möller’s exhibitions were presented at WCW Gallery in Hamburg, “Der bohèmistische Leichnam” (“The Bohemian Corpse”) at Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof (2009), “Reisestipendiaten, Neue Kunst in Hamburg e.V.” (“Travel Scholarships, Neue Kunst in Hamburg e.V.”) at Galerie für Landschaftskunst (2008), “Nichts zu sehen (Reihe Insert: Who)” (“Nothing to See (Series Insert: Who)”) at Kunstverein Hamburg (cooperation with Friedrich M. Ploch) (2007) among others. Together with Hannes Loichinger and Tillmann Terbuyken she ran the exhibition room “Pudelkollektion” at Hamburg’s Golden Pudel Club from 2004 to 2008. Upcoming exhibitions in 2010 are planned at Galerie Cinzia Friedlaender, Berlin, WCW Gallery, Hamburg, Haus am Waldsee, Berlin and at the Villa Romana, Florence.
Björn Beneditz was born in Husum in 1978. He studied at Hamburg’s Hochschule für bildende Künste from 2002 to 2009. Exhibitions by Björn Beneditz were – among others – presented at “Der bohèmistische Leichnam” (“The Bohemian Corpse”) at Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof (2009), “The Beached Whale”, MAKNETE (former barge of Galerie für Landschaftkunst), Hamburg, “The Basement”, Kunstverein Hamburg and Kampnagel (2008), “Don ́t accept mañana”, Kunstverein Braunschweig (2005), “No Body”, Galerie Meerrettich, Berlin, “Get dressed for excess”, Die Blaue Kugel, Hamburg (2004). Since 2008 Björn Beneditz has been running the WCW Gallery in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg.
