"two of a kind"
20.11. – 13.12.2008, Opening 20.11.2008 at 7 pm
English artist Charlotte Moth (*1978) presents “two of a kind”, her first solo exhibition in Germany at Hermes und der Pfau. Her practice has developed from a personal experience of the itinerant, of a movement between countries, places, that enables a conditional and phenomenological reading of architectural spaces to occur. Here photography is used as a device that allows a sculptural observation and vocabulary to develop. The infinite possibility and activity of taking photographs has resulted in a continually growing “Travelogue”, an archive of settings. The archive of the Travelogue is able to be presented in different forms. As a photographic series, text, as part of installations. On the occasion of the exhibition 'two of a kind', two approaches to photography are brought together side by side within the context of the exhibition space. Here the space of Hermes und der Pfau has been used as an actual material and context for the works to develop within, resulting in the two works shown here having a common or shared ground through their individual relationships to the space.
In the first work the space is considered when hanging recent photographs of the “Travelogue”. A previous experience of seeing the Andre Cadere retrospective at the Musée d'art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in March of this year is simulated through the re-construction of a wall in the exhibition that was specially built to enable a series of historical pictures of Cadere to be seen sequentially. This structure of display created a short journey for the visitor and unraveled at the same time some of the many walks, interventions, and personal encounters that Cadere had made with his round bars of wood.
The second work presented is in the form of a book that is a multiple. Here a previous two day visit to the space of Hermes und der Pfau between exhibition turnaround is revealed. This book displays large-leaved plants and cubic forms in various configurations in the space with differing levels of illumination, both ambient and artificial. While going through the book in the space of Hermes und der Pfau, one experiences a sense of doubling, a reference to the nature of photography as a medium that has the ability to simulate and capture a previous experience. At the same time the event that the photograph depicts is reframed, and simultaneously distanced. This framing creates a link to a past event, that makes for a current encounter, and a potential unfolding of images and a passage of seeing that an object such as a book enables. This passage of seeing is reiterated in the sequential display of photographs in the Cadere wall, making the two works that share this space two of a kind.
Charlotte Moth studied at the Slade School of Art in London and the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. Her work was shown at the Stedelijk Museum Bureau in Amsterdam, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (both in 2008), the JET Space in Berlin and the Project Art Centre in Dublin (2007) as well as Dolores at Ellen de Bruijne Projects in Amsterdam (2006). Additional exhibitions in 2009 are planned for the Process Room of the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, the showcase of the Kunstverein für Rheinlande und Westfalen in Düsseldorf, LACE in Los Angeles.
After holding a scholarship in 2007/ 2008 from the Le Pavilion of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Charlotte Moth is currently taking part in the Residency Programme of IMMA in Dublin. From 2006 to 2007 Charlotte Moth co-curated the exhibition space falkeandcharlotte in Amsterdam with Falke Pisano.
The works shown in “two of a kind” came into existence within the context of the Residency Programme of the Irish Museum of Modern Art and with support from the Arts Council of England Individuals Lottery, Grants for the Arts Award.
