KOSTÜM TOTAL (PETER HOLL & ALEXANDER GYÖRFI)
"Im Gegenlicht sehen wir die Menschen nicht“"
22.12.2008 – 17.01.2009, Opening 22.12.2008 at 7 pm
“So wie die Räder im Weltall sich drehen,
so will ich tanzen und nie mehr still stehen.”
Hermes und der Pfau is pleased to present the film “Im Gegenlicht sehen wir die Menschen nicht” within the exhibition of the same name. The film – created by “Kostüm Total”, a joint project of Stuttgart based artists Peter Holl and Alexander Györfi, results out of a bizarr performance which is provided with numerous references to modernism and avant-garde trends of the twenties – has already been performed by both artists at different locations. At the moment, it can also be seen at the Frankfurter Kunstverein in the exhibition “Experimenta FOLKLORE”, curated by Tobi Maier, together with a stage setting like space installation of Kostüm Total.
As an experimental stage- and dance project, settled in the film somewhere between absurd theatre and classical video clip, the film “Im Gegenlicht sehen wir die Menschen nicht” combines catchy elements of electro pop with a sound collage remembering the technique of Musique Concrète. The costumes of the two musicians are made of paper-mâché, cloth and cardboard and consist of the elemental geometrical forms of cone, sphere, and cylinder. They are kept in black and white, just like the rouged faces of the two musicians, who are, in the first part of the film, inspecting their over-sized musical instruments like explorers in a surreal wonderland. Abstract shots, animated with stop-motion technique, are changing the scenery into a theatrical spectacle abundant with obscure humour.
Kostüm Total is a common performance project of Stuttgart's artists Peter Holl (*1971) and Alexander Györfi (*1968), which was amongst others shown at the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart within “Maskharat, Ball der Demaskierung” (2006) and currently at the Frankfurter Kunstverein within the exhibition „Experimenta FOLKLORE” (2008). The film “Im Gegenlicht sehen wir die Menschen nicht” was developed in the context of the project “Friends in Bands” with support of the city of Stuttgart. Alexander Györfi has exhibited among others at Kunsthaus Graz (2005), Palais du Tokyo in Paris (2004 and 2001), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Leipzig (2003), Gallery Gió Marconi, Milan (2000) and Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg (1999). Works by Peter Holl has been shown at Galerie Rainer Wehr, Stuttgart (2008, 2006, 2000), at Kravets/Wehby Gallery, New York (2006), Juliètte Jongma Gallery, Amsterdam (2004) and Künstlerhaus Stuttgart (2004). Peter Holl is represented by Galerie Rainer Wehr in Stuttgart.
