Jamie Hawkesworth’s approach to photography is grounded in the subtle, elegiac and spirited heritage of British documentary photography.
In 2007 Jamie Hawkesworth (1987) was studying Forensic Science at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston (UK) when he first picked up a camera to photograph reconstructed crime scenes. A year later he decided to switch to studying photography. Upon graduating from the University, Hawkesworth created nuanced and empathetic portrayals of the architecture and inhabitants of Northern England. As a member of the Preston is My Paris collective, he created photographs and a short film for his project Preston Bus Station, which was exhibited as a site-specific work and published as a newspaper.
Hawkesworth has developed a finely-tuned ability to observe and choreograph authentic interactions with his subjects, a skill which translates perfectly to his fashion work. His distinctive editorial commissions are published in The New York Times Style Magazine, Vogue US/UK/Paris, W, and WSJ. Magazine, among many others.
Hawkesworth’s oeuvre has continued to develop out of a great and endearing curiosity and fascination with the particular, the strange and the beautiful in everyday life. Hawkesworth’s talent is given ample space in this first major solo museum exhibition. The show navigates through all rooms of Huis Marseille, guiding the viewer through a playful, and elegant exploration of photography.
Coinciding with the exhibition Hawkesworth will present his first book, Preston Bus Station, which details the eponymous project. This hardcover book is published by Dashwood and will be available in Huis Marseille’s museum store.
