Kiosk XV: Modes of Multiplication
17 Dec 2005 - 15 Jan 2006
Kiosk is a travelling archive of independent publishing projects within the field of contemporary art.
With contributions from more than 250 alternative and self-organised publishing houses, Kiosk comprises a diverse and illuminating range of artists’ books, periodicals, alternative magazines and audio and video projects. First presented in 2001 at Galerie Karin Guenther, Hamburg, Kiosk has since travelled to various public institutions, galleries and artist-run spaces across Europe. Typically taking the form of a reading room or library and reconfigured by a different artist or designer at each new location, Kiosk has continually expanded and metamorphosed with each new venue to which it has travelled.
Kiosk aims to provide an imaginative, broad overview of the possibilities for realising and distributing different forms of artistic practice, in addition to exposing the varying strategies, aims and programmes of the participating publishing houses. Rather than focusing on the individual projects or publications, Kiosk examines how publishers and editors, as well as artists, work within the context and constraints of printed and recorded material.
Kiosk has been organised and compiled by Christoph Keller, founder and former director of Revolver - Archiv für aktuelle Kunst, a Frankfurt based publishing house which has concentrated on producing artists’ books since 1999. ICA Exhibitions has invited the artist Liam Gillick to develop the display of Kiosk in the Lower Gallery and Concourse and this will be realised in conjunction with the artist Edgar Schmitz.
