COUP DE MAIN
Hadassah Emmerich / Catherine Lorent / C. Enache
27 November, 2010 - 15 January, 2011
Coup de Main brings together the work of three artists whose visual language challenges the representation of the figure and the construction of the picture plane. Combining craftmanship with concept, the viewer comes across shrewd ways of consciousness such as timetravelling, mirroring, enlarging and replicating. The work invites to simultaneously enter a pictorial and a graphical space...
Hadassah Emmerich's approach to art making is multifaceted, ranging from personal intuition to literary references and theory. On a formal level she combines abstract ornamental forms with carefully composed elements, making choices that are always in dialogue with the content. In the work for Coup de Main Emmerich examines her own practice by reproducing a previously made linocut and painting as two large- scale black and white drawings, opening up issues around the artist' signature.
The work of Catherine Lorent takes the viewer on a guided tour that leads from historical ornaments to seascapes. Lorents images are constructed like a train of thought, alternating in approach between rational and irrational areas. The lightness and humour of the work allows the viewers eye to jump playfully between different times and places. For Coup de Main Lorent created a new, large scale drawing that
shows stylized gestures, figures in an ‘architectural' surrounding in suspension and also in tension.
Simulating a natural appearance, the paintings of C. Enache explore the pictorial space by creating and observing physical interactions, moving between intention and suggestion. The image is captured by working with the inherent qualities of the used materials, resulting in a depiction that goes beyond illusion and becomes quasi real. This process is followed by an accurate stage of editing to reveal occuring details, which completes the work.
