STEPHEN INGGS
"Solitude"

This series of new work is informed by an experiential sense of both ancient and recent history written onto the landscape of the Karoo as 'a site for utopian and dystopian speculation' (Manhire 2004:10)*. Marks that have been left on the land by millennia of history are evident all over the place, ranging from ancient fossils to wire fences erected in 1800s. In this vast inhospitable and mysterious terrain the sense of isolation and solitude is palpable and confronts the imagination very directly.
