La galerie Jousse Entreprise a le plaisir de vous convier au vernissage de l’exposition de SUPERFLEX “Burning car” le jeudi 25 juin de 16h à 21h au 24, rue Louise Weiss, Paris 13é.
Le collectif danois SUPERFLEX est formé depuis 1993 par Bjørnstjerne Reuter Christiansen (1969), Jakob Fenger (1968) et Rasmus Nielsen (1969). Il travaille sur une série de projets relevant leur intérêt avoué pour l’engagement politique et social à échelle locale. SUPERFLEX intervient là où le porte ses intérêts, c’est-à-dire là où est constatée la nécessité d’implanter une solution ”contre-économique” en expérimentant des moyens de production alternatifs. Superflex entend l’art comme un outil ‘TOOL’ au service des hommes, un moyen d’intervenir et d’agir intelligemment dans le réel. Sa production se centre ainsi sur des instruments qui incitent à l’action. A chaque utilisateur d’en tirer les conséquences. le groupe est amené à travailler avec des collaborateurs d’horizons très divers, des ONG et des scientifiques aussi bien que des ingénieurs ou des programmateurs en informatique.
Le collectif a déjà agit en Thailande, en Europe et au Brésil, où, par exemple avec “Guarana Power”, il propose la production d’une boisson énergétique par une coopérative brésilienne locale menacée par le monopole récent de la commercialisation du Guarana par les grandes multinationales. Il espère ainsi crée un nouvel équilibre économique.
Dans le film “Burning car”, présenté à la galerie Jousse Entreprise, une voiture s’enflamme peu à peu jusqu’à sa destruction totale. Le véhicule commence à s’enflammer, l’habitacle est envahi par la fumée et le feu, la peinture boursoufle, les pneus explosent. Le film peut s’envisager comme une réaction aux troubles dans les villes européennes comme Copenhague ou Paris. Il montre un nouveau symbole des relations difficiles entre les sociètés occidentales et leur population en perpétuelle mutation. SUPERFLEX nous propose une image que nous ne pouvons plus reconnaître comme une image de protestation et de révolte typique des régions déchirées par la guerre ou des dictatures lointaines mais une image des banlieues “ civilisées” de l’Europe.
Depuis quelques années le travail de SUPERFLEX a acquis une reconnaissance internationale. Les artistes danois ont notamment présenté leurs projets en exposition individuelle à la Kunsthalle de Bâle en Suisse ( Supershow - more than a show), au GFZK à Leipzig en Allemagne ( Social Pudding en collaboration avec Rirkrit Tiravanija) à la Schirn Kunsthalle de Frankfurt ( Open Market), la REDCAT Gallery à Los Angeles ( Guarana Power ), la Galerie Side 2 à Tokyo, Gallery 1301PE à Los Angeles, à la South London Gallery. En 2002, SUPERFLEX participa à la Biennale de Corée. En 2003, il participa à l’exposition “Utopia Station” à la Biennale de Venise.
The Danish artists’ group (Jakob Fenger, Rasmus Nielsen and Bjonstjerne Christiansen) has been working together since 1993 on a series of projects related to economic forces, democratic production conditions and self-organisation. The artists have examined alternative energy production methods and commodity production in Brazil, Thailand and Europe in their projects, which both expose and question the existing economic structures. These artistic activities — as, for example, the on-going project “Guarana Power”, in which the artists developed a drink together with local farmers who cultivate the caffeine-rich berries of the guarana plant — are not necessarily opposed to commercialism and globalisation, but try instead to render economic structures visible and to establish a new balance.
Superflex describe their projects as tools, as proposals that invite people to actively participate in and communicate the development of experimental models that alter the prevailing economic production conditions. The projects are assisted by experts who bring in their respective special interest, these tools can then be further utilized and modified by their users.
“Burning Car” is a film work by Superflex, presented in the Gallery Jousse Entreprise, in which a car is being set on fire. The empty car starts to burn, the cabin is filled with smoke and fire, car-paint is bobbling, tires explodes. Towards the end the car is burned out completely.
It can be considered a reaction to the social unrest in Europe’s cities such as Copenhagen and Paris. The film shows a new symbol of difficult relationship between Western societies and their changing populations.
SUPERFLEX shows us an image that we no longer recognise as an image of protest and revolt in wartorn regions and dictatorships far beyond our shores, but an image from the suburbs of ‘civilised’ Europe.
Over the past years, Superflex have achieved international recognition for their projects. The Danish artists had solo exhibitions, among others, at the Kunsthalle Basel in Switzerland (Supershow — more than a show), GFZK in Leipzig, Germany (Social Pudding in collaboration with Rirkrit Tiravanija), Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt am Main (Open market), the REDCAT Gallery in Los Angeles (Guarana Power) and the Gallery side 2 in Tokyo, Gallery 1301PE in Los Angeles. In 2002, Superflex participated in the Gwangju biennial in Korea. In 2003, Superflex participated in the “Utopia Station” exhibition at the Venice Biennale.
