Karsten Greve Gallery is very pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition dedicated to the major American artist Catherine Lee. Her work of the past decade and as of late will be presented.

Catherine Lee's metal, bronze, clay, glass or paper objects cannot easily be described with traditional terms. Initially her work consisted of the classical genres drawing and sculpture but in exploring different techniques and combining the genres she developed an extraordinary artistic language, which stands out due to its severe and monumental aura. Besides her freestanding sculptures her wall objects are a very typical example for this fusion of genre. Here, the categories of relief, sculpture, and painting merge into a harmonious synthesis.

Catherine Lee often chooses forms and titles, which trigger off manifold associations. By times they resemble archaic tools, for example can that be seen in her work Bronze Plummets (1996); or they remind us of erratics from ancient times impressing us with their enormous physical presence, like Calanais of artists Hebrides Series (2004). Catherine Lee likes to experiment with heavy weight. For instance, she often creates objects, which are reduced to a point at the bottom so that the impression of ease and the weight of the material balance each other out.

Catherine Lee prefers materials that can be transformed from a liquid into a solid state. For this reason she mainly works with metals and clay and additionally tries to emphasize their inherent qualities as far as possible. She manually produces patina, which covers the sculptures with plenty of colour nuances and furthermore points out the individuality of several elements of multipart works. This effect can be seen in the artists work Aleuts (2007).

Catherine Lee lives and works in New York and Texas. Her works are represented in many well-known collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Tate Gallery in London. As a result of exhibitions in the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin (Dublin, 2005), the Modern Art Museum, La Terrasse (Saint Etienne, 2006) and at the Hôtel des Arts (Toulon, 2006) she also gained more and more recognition in Europe.
