Kavi Gupta Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in Chicago by Los Angeles based artist Ashley Macomber.

Ashley Macomber's paintings describe the difficulties of human relationships involving the pain, vulnerability, strength and entanglement of love. Though her work is about how one experiences these feelings, Macomber uses images of animals with human attributes to narrate these emotions and emphasize also how we often force these human feelings onto animals.

Macomber's latest body of work centers around the conflicts and emotions of family. The exhibition The Clearing is installed and set up as a theatrical play including a theater curtain used to differentiate between the works acting as the performers and the audience. The installation re-emphasizes the role of storytelling as well as dialogue and conversation which is an integral part of the family relationship. The animals represented in Macomber's world are predominantly wolves and deer which bring to mind fairy-tales and the visual language that is inherent in these timeless stories. This epic tale is not one of predator verses prey but about the symbiotic role that exists between the two and the patterns which are often perpetuated and passed along like a sickness. The abuser cannot exist without the victim.

Ashley Macomber lives and works in Los Angeles. She has exhibited her work at Marianne Boesky Gallery, NY, Creative Time, NY, Elizabeth Dee Gallery, NY, New Image Art, LA, Clementine Gallery and White Box, NY. Macomber was also included in Good World in association with Beautiful Losers, Cincinnati, Ohio.
