Kerlin Gallery is delighted to announce its first solo show by Kathy Prendergast from 8th June to 14th July.
The exhibition will comprise of 40 water colours and accompanying hand painted bronze sculptures. With remarkable delicacy and an innate gift for drawing Kathy Prendergast explores the complex subject of family history, identity and relationships. Each work is a celebration and a commemoration of the communal ceremonies, such as weddings and confirmations and that shape a family's particular history. Prendergast's work has persistently revolved around a potent cluster of issues chief among which are sexuality, identity, landscape, mapping and power. Recently her immediate horizon has expanded crucially to incorporate the three-generational span of her own family. In this exhibition Prendergast takes her own personal family histories as a point of departure to create a multi layered, evocative and poignant body of work that is of universal importance.
Kathy Prendergast began exhibiting in the early 1980s and currently lives and works in London. She participated in the 1985 Paris Biennale and in 1995 she was awarded the Premio 2000 for the best young artist at the Venice Biennale. A section of her monumental project 'The City Drawings', comprising more than a hundred tiny delicate drawings of the streetplans of the world's capital cities, was shown first at Venice and subsequently at the Tate Gallery, London. A larger section again was exhibited in Prendergast's 1999 solo exhibition at the Irish Muesum of Modern Art, which has since acquired the work in its entirety for its permanent collection. In recent years Prendergast has exhibited widely in various venues including Sydney Biennale, the ICA, Boston, the Drawing Center, New York and '0044', an exhibition which toured PS1, New York, Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo in 1999/2000. She is represented in the collections of the Tate Gallery, London, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Dublin City Gallery Hugh Lane, the Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville, the Albright-Knox Museum, Buffalo and the Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, and numerous private collections in Ireland, Great Britain, Europe and USA.
