Maya Økland - "I RECOGNIZE YOU"

"I was born in Bergen, Norway, but lived mostly in Varberg, Sweden, together with my younger sister and Brazilian mother. My sister and I spent weekends and holidays together with our Norwegian/Icelandic father who moved around a lot. Every five years I went to the other side of the world to visit the maternal side of my family in Tocantins, Brazil. ... As I grew up, photography became important to me in the sense of overcoming distance and recalling faces."
(Maya Økland, New Nordic Photography, Hasselblad Center, Gothenborg 2006)

IRL - in real life, 2003
IRL consists of 20 portraits of persons who I came in contact with through online chat communities. Each portrait is presented with its online nickname/identity.

In the void of meaning I cry for sanity, 2008
"The theme of the exhibition Rykk tilbake til start, 0047, Oslo, Ferbruary 2008 was to experiment and try out new perspectives in your art. Encouraged to go back to our starting points, show scetches and unfinished projects I chose to make an art project in the technique I was originally trained in: analogue black and white photography, to see, if, and how it communicates within contemporary art scene."
