Mumbai: A Laundry Field
The three-part video installation "Mumbai: A Laundry Field" by Kimsooja (*1957 in Taegu, Korea; lives and works in New York) will be presented by the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein at the Johanniterkirche Feldkirch.
The artist Kimsooja has been using traditional fabrics from her home country in her works since the 1980s. The bright, colourful birds and flowers on these fabrics incorporate universal symbols of life. Kimsooja continues the image of fabric, of thread, of sewing, in many of her installations, performances and video and photo works. She even regards herself as a symbolic needle: “The relationship between needle and fabric resembles that between my body and the universe” (Kimsooja). Fabric, washing and cleansing also play a major role in the work Mumbai: A Laundry Field. This particular work takes us into the districts where the launderers live in Dhobighat, to the slums of the Indian capital Mumbai, and in doing so astonishes us with its poetry and its vigour.
The exhibition is a collaborative project by the Johanniterkirche Feldkirch (Eva Jakob) and the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein.
