JAN DIBBETS
Works from 1969 - today
10 May - 28 July 2012
Jan Dibbets pioneering work marks a conceptual approach towards photography as a basic component of Land Art. Since the late 1960s, Dibbets primarily focused problems of perception and optical illusion in his multifaceted oeuvre. From the early "Persperctive Corrections" on till recent series of works, Dibbets is exploring the inconsistency of our concept of reality and its construction in the field of contemporary photography.
In a retrospective exhibition, Konrad Fischer Galerie gladly presents early photo works like "Perspective Correction Square in Grass" and "Shadows in my studio" (both 1969) as well as one of his most important pieces, the "Panorama Dutch Mountain/Land" (1971). Indicating the artist’s continuing interest in the idea of perception, the show also features a series of Dibbets’ 1990s "Window" motifs and works from the "Land and Sea Horizon" series (2007).
Besides his participation in documenta 5, 6 and 7 and Venice Biennials of 1972, 1978, 1980 and 1988, Dibbets’ works have been exhbited along with those of Lawrence Weiner, Carl Andre, Richard Long and Sol LeWitt in legendary shows like "Live In Your Head: When Attitudes Become Form" (Kunsthalle Bern, 1969) and "Op Losse Schroeven / Everything Is Uncertain – Situations and Cryptostructures" (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, 1969). Recently, the works of Jan Dibbets have been featured at shows at Art Institute Chicago, at Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris and at Cultuurcentrum Mechelen. From 1984 till 2004 Jan Dibbets has been teaching at Academy of Fine Arts Düsseldorf.
