Wolfgang Laib creates his art out of nature. Pollen, milk, bee wax, marble, rice and sealing wax are his chosen mediums. They are energetic, generative substances from the world of nature, from its active cycles. In 1975 Laib starts with milk stones. 1977 he begins to collect pollen. In 1983 he works with rice and four years later with bees wax. Each of these elementary groups develops continuously. In his transient installations Wolfgang Laib combines the permanence of the marble with the evanescence of the rice and pollen. His chosen images are archetypical shapes cast from richly tactile natural materials. They produce in the viewer an experience of immediate sensuous pleasure and an equally immediate effect of spiritual mystery in pure and natural colours. Finally, their titles - Passage, Elsewhere, Nowhere, You will go Somewhere else - elicit the ideas of a transmutation of substance, a transmigration of meaning, or an initiatory journey.
