PALOMA VARGA WEISZ
June 13 - July 26, 2008
Opening: June 13, 2008, 6 - 9 pm
Konrad Fischer Galerie is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition by Paloma Varga Weisz on June 13 th, between 6 and 9 pm. Besides fourteen new drawings we will show two large scale sculptures. ‚Nest’ combines contradictory elements which connect the theme of security with the notion of ever present danger. Hanging from an oversized version of a cat’s scratching post we see a fragile nestlike plaster structure containing a wooden head which is visible only through a hole. This configuration points to the constant instability of a secure satus quo.
Another kind of dwelling confronts us in ‚Untitled (Old Mother in a Barrel)’. Within an old wine barrel we find an almost life-size female body lying on its back with its knees slightly bent. The fragility of the plaster figure contrasts sharply with the solidity of the huge barrel. Rarely has there been a sculpture depicting the relationship between the body and its surroundings, between protection and vulnerability evoking such emotinal intensity.
In her new drawings Varga Weisz oftentimes depicts characters which seem to come from a foregone era. Her ‚Comedian’, her ‚Women with Hairnet’ or her ‚Man with Melon’ can be seen as phenotypes of the ‚Gilden Age’ but nevertheless always remain recognizable as individuals.
