Way Out East
10 September - 6 November 2010

Konrad Fischer Galerie is pleased to announce the first solo show ‚Way Out East’ of American artist Rita McBride in Berlin.

In 1988 Rita McBride constructed her first kiosk entitled "Alternatives in Real Estate and Real Markets". It consisted of a countertop, a nod to Tatlin's unbuilt monument and a hot dog grilling machine without the hot dogs. It was installed at Los Angeles Contemproary Exhibitions (L.A.C.E.) and served as a wry comment on the roles of alternative art initiatives in the larger community of cultural institutions like MOCA or LACMA. Her second kiosk, 22 years later, made of carbon tubes and galvanized aluminium, refers directly to her large public sculpture entitled Mae West, to be erected in November of this year in Munich on the Effnerplatz. The 1.5 million Euro Kunst am Bau competition was awarded to McBride in 2002 and has endured 8 years of public deliberation, political attack, and financial duress. In an attempt to keep the project visible and financially feasible throughout this absurdly long public process, she has continually produced works pertinent to the light weight 52 meter high structure made of carbon. Items such as Mae West tapestries made in Mexico, a set of large steel templates to make your own Mae West, Mae West prints, Mae West survival kits consisting of a life vest of carbon (Mae West was slang for life vests in WWII), a commissioned celebrity fictional biography by Matthew Licht, a pin up, a bottle of alcohol, and a smaller tin set of templates - all placed in a metal tool case, Mae West posters, a propaganda video, commissioned paintings of Mae West in paradise by Glen Rubsamen as well as a set of carbon "sex toys" represent just a sampling of the varied production that has been assembled to date.

Way Out East, is the second of three exhibitions (the first - Way Out West was presented April of this year in Cologne and the upcoming third venue - Way Out South is scheduled for October 2010 at the Klueser 2 Galerie in Munich). All three exhibitions display these visually and financially supportive "wares" in different combinations and with different direction. The Mae West Kiosk, newly produced for Berlin, is designed as a light weight transportable structure and speaks to the function of the Konrad Fischer Galerie - the building was once a Department store - as a commercial enterprise that embraces, presents and protects cultural production.
