"Past Particles"

June 11 - September 4, 2010

Opening: Friday, June 11, 2010, 4pm – 10pm

Konrad Fischer Galerie is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition Past Particles by Sofia Hultén.

Reconstruction, renovation and rearrangement recur as processes throughout Sofia Hultén’s work. The act of making, the materiality of the objects she chooses to work with, and their relationship with time permeate her practice. Using objects, video and photography, Hultén investigates cycles of transformation and change in the things around us.

For this exhibition, Sofia Hultén presents a new series of works which continue to pursue ideas and approaches which she has been working with in recent years. Several pieces use found materials as a starting point for explorations of various methods of reconstruction and mimesis, often using methods from furniture restoration and crime scene investigation to analyse the potential history of objects and materials. Objects are variously expanded, rearranged and multiplied.

The work ‘If you want to hide a tree, go to the forest’ (2010) consists of nine pieces of found wooden beading from a house renovation in Berlin ‘hidden’ within an extensive arrangement of new variations on the found pieces made by the artist.
In ‘Artificial Conglomerate’ (2010) a mould is made of a rock from a street building site. The rock is then pulverized, and the mould and the rock material used to recast the stone in its found form but with the material within rearranged.
‘Past Particles’ (2010) examines the contents of a found toolbox; from old scraps of wood, and bent nails to used metal parts of unknown purpose. Over a thousand small objects are recorded individually on video and presented on a single monitor, so that the perception of this diverse collection is extended over a period of time. This temporal extension becomes spatial in ‘With Added Dimensions’ (2010), a found toolbox which has been expanded far beyond its usual proportions.

Born in Sweden in 1972, Hultén, lives and works in Berlin. Hultén has exhibited extensively in Europe and worldwide. Recent exhibitions include Sofia Hultén with Wolfgang Plöger, Galerie Nelson-Freeman, Paris, ‘Test/Tat’ Galerie Für Gegenwartskunst, Bremen, ‘Berlin 2000’ Pace Wildenstein New York, ‘Pop-Up!’ Ludwig Forum Aachen, ‘Back to Back’ Konrad Fischer Oben, Berlin, and ‘Drawn Onward’, Perrot’s Folly Ikon Gallery Offsite, Birmingham UK.
