"Wall Drawings"

Opening: Friday, February 26, 6-9 pm

Konrad Fischer Gallery Berlin is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of Wall Drawings by Sol LeWitt.

For Sol LeWitt in the early 60's the idea of an artwork was more important than its execution. This makes him one of the leading exponents of Minimalism and Conceptual Art. He is mainly known for his geometrical structures and his large wall drawings. The first wall drawings were conceived in 1968 and Konrad Fischer showed Wall Drawing #3 and #4 in April 1969 at his exhibition space in Dusseldorf. LeWitt’s wall drawings were ground breaking for their temporal quality and the fact that they were strictly related to the architecture of the given spaces. LeWitt did not always personally execute the drawings which was also something new. Frequently he had other people assist him in their creation or other artists would simply follow LeWitt's set of instructions or diagram for each drawing in order to execute the work.
Our exhibition is comprised of wall drawings 571 A, 576, and 578 which were all conceived in the 1980's. Oddly, such straightforward instructions such as "Wall Drawing #571A: Drawings with five equal horizontal bands with color ink washes superimposed. Each drawing is bordered by a 3/4" (2 cm) white band, a 6" (15 cm) black band, and an 8" (20 cm) white band. Color ink wash. The bands are the white wall or India ink. Top to bottom: A - G, G, Y, G; Y, B, G, G; Y, R, G, G; G, Y, Y, Y; G, G, R, B. " manifest amazingly stunning, sensual and complex drawings.
