Written Language (Line Drawings)

Opening: Friday, March 13, 6-9 pm

Konrad Fischer Gallery Berlin is pleased to announce the opening of the 2nd exhibition of the series Fischer oben (1st floor space), with the exhibition "Written Language (Line Drawings)" by the artist Sophie Tottie.

"Written Language" starts with a hand drawn line. Materials are a dip pen, pigmented ink and paper. Every successive line is attempting to incorporate each previous line’s deviation. In this way the drawing proceeds by way of the first barely visible, then more and more extreme shifts produced by the previous line.

The line drawings follow a procedure where the concept is decided beforehand and then strictly executed. The visual outcome of the drawing process is nonetheless difficult to foresee and the lack of total control of the concept as well as the process become visible only when the work is completed.

"Written Language" accentuates the small deviation’s increased importance as it is being repeated, enlarged and takes on its own form – a form that finally takes over the entire drawing. The visual effect of the multiple lines also transforms Written Language to a surface structure not unlike the modernistic grid of endless repetition. But instead of only underlining the self-referentiality of the materials and the process – the works reveal the mistakes and variations of every day practice. Only when standing in front of the large-scale drawings can the sum of the hand drawn configuration and their different layers of meaning be glimpsed in their entirety.
