Föreställningar* is a joint project by Gertrud Alfredsson and Anna Brag about our ideas about various everyday phenomena. Central to the project is the technique of drawing in an expanded sense, which is used to make everyday life visible and as a starting point for creating spatial narratives. Drawing’s flexibility and simplicity is used to break down, construct and re-evaluate ideas and interpretations about our times, our language, and the opportunities we have to shape our lives and ourselves.

The title refers to the French philosopher Foucault’s concept of “eventualization”, which involves making everyday reality visible by elevating it to an event (“föreställning” in Swedish). Alfredsson and Brag explore how an exhibition can function as a space for such events by creating spatial totalities, a kind of scenographic form of expression that encompasses space, time and movement, and sound. During the project the two artists will create space for a number of events plus a book. The project’s contents will be developed together with its form as the process continues. Drawing – as a projection, animation, in book form or on paper – is the project’s backbone. The physical format of drawing is very malleable and the same images can appear in various formats.

The Föreställningar project starts at Malmö Konsthall and will consist of a series of exhibitions and workshops plus a book. The project will be done in stages – chapter by chapter, event by event. The results of each workshop will be incorporated in the project in various ways. The book, which functions as an archive, is intended to emerge in stages over time, to be compiled and published in its final form at the beginning of 2019.

Gertrud Alfredsson and Anna Brag have followed and been inspired by each other’s artistic expression for more than 25 years. Whilst both of them are inspired by what surrounds us in everyday life and both have drawing as a common starting point, their forms of artistic expression are very different. In Föreställningar the encounter between them becomes an interesting cross-fertilisation of artistic expression and ways of thinking.

Welcome to the opening Wednesday October 26.10, 6–9 p.m.

* The Swedish word "Föreställningar" means: Performances, representations, presentations, notions, imaginations, visualizations, ideas, conceptions
