"This Is How We Walk on the Moon"

4.9-16.11 2008

Johanna Billing uses video to portray group interactions, individual identity and social structures, capturing situations of societal change. Her multilayered interpretations of places and circumstances oscillate between documentary and fiction, merging an interest in the real and the improvised with a precise and minimal cinematic language. Always staged, the looped video installations dwell on routines, rehearsals and rituals, presenting us with people in concentrated situations, where changes are taking place, are about to take place or could take place. A specific performative activity is often used as a vehicle for articulating certain struggles – personal, social and political. Billing’s films often involve music, which in her hands becomes a medium of exchange, memory and reconstruction.
And within the narrative structures, the participants’ reduced, and at times even mute, actions often become nostalgic and melancholic, reminding the viewer of lost or found collectiveness and the power structures of contemporary society.
At Malmö Konsthall, Billing will present the following films: Where she is at (2001), Magical World (2005), Magic & Loss (2005), Another Album (2006), This is how we walk on the moon (2007) and You don’t love me yet, documentation archive on DVDs (2002-2008). Besides the films, Billing will show the photographs Make it happen – on tour (2000), Another Album (2005-2006) and Ropes (2005) for the first time.
Johanna Billing (b. 1973 Jönköping, Sweden) lives and works in Stockholm. Billing’s most recent solo presentations include Collective Gallery, Edinburgh (2007), Hollybush Gardens, London (2007), Dundee Centre of Contemporary Art (2007), Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Basel (2007). Last year, Billing participated in Documenta 12, Kassel (2007).
Billing is the founder of the record label Make it happen. A 10 year Make it happen anniversary performance will be held at Malmö Konsthall November 5th 2008.
