TRANSIT // CHRISTIAN HAAKE & KORPYS/LÖFFLER
Der Bremer Kunst Satellit reist nach Istanbul // The Bremer art satellite travels to Istanbul
17 September - 8 October, 2011

The city of Istanbul and the country of Turkey evoke a great variety of images and associations. The sparkling Orient, bustling trade and exchange, a melting pot of the most diverse cultural and artistic groups and movements dating back thousands of years. The artists Korpys/Löffler and Christian Haake explore the conventions and customs of the inhabitants of this land in their exhibition Transit. Media ranging from negatives made on the journey from Bremen to Istanbul in an old Ford Transit over the same route used by itinerant workers, to a film that pours forth visual images of Turkey and Istanbul. In the process a different view of this distant land and its traditions comes to light. During the journey to Istanbul attention is focused on the area around the so-called Autoput and the changes of the past decades are captured on celluloid. From visions of Istanbul and Turkey emerge what are apparently the real settings of a film. The motif of change pervades the exhibition by Christian Haake and Korpys/Löffler. The Ford Transit stands symbolically and literally for transformation; for the societal, social as well as for the immaterial; for the reshaping of images and ideas; for the reconciliation of
imagination and reality.
For nine years now renowned curators have been bringing artists from Bremen to exhibitions all over the world as part of the Kunst Satellit project. The previous stations were New York, U.S.A; Casablanca, Morocco; Mumbai and Delhi, India; Riga, Latvia; Vilnius, Lithuania; Kyoto, Japan; Reykjavík, Iceland and Damascus, Syria. The envoy of German art is now heading to Istanbul, Turkey.
