LOOKING BACK AHEAD

11 September 2010 — 16 January 2011

The Kunsthalle Dьsseldorf and KIT — Kunst im Tunnel focus together on a younger generation of important artists that studied at the Dьsseldorf Academy of the Arts in the 1980s and 1990s, and who have gained a reputation in the worldwide exhibition and museum context. The exhibition concentrates on three outstanding artists who have each embraced their own approach to re-interpreting and extending classical media.

Katharina Grosse's (*1961) sweeping and extensive painting redefines the relationship between colour and space, diffusing it with performative elements.
Dirk Skreber (*1961), who gained fame with his seemingly real and yet strangely placeless disaster pictures, experiments with the transfer of painterly possibilities into the third dimension.
A representative of a younger generation, Bjцrn Dahlem (*1974) will be exhibiting in the KIT — Kunst im Tunnel. His sculptures and installations of everyday materials and illuminated neon tubes are full of allusions to scientific and cosmic phenomena.

Of central importance for the conception of the exhibition is the idea that the Quadriennale 2010 is to be not only an historical show but also a place where art is created in exhibition venues and in the city itself. Katharina Grosse and Dirk Skreber, who have hitherto gained a reputation with their institutional projects, will be developing works for outdoor spaces and will thus be using the Quadriennale to present new ideas.
