In the exhibition Stolberggasse zu Friedrichstraße zu Grabbeplatz in the foyer of Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Sophie Thun (* 1985 in Frankfurt am Main) is showing a selection of works that were created as part of her exhibition at Secession on Friedrichstraße in Vienna during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The artist had set up her darkroom in the exhibition space and created hundreds of photograms of all the objects in her apartment on Stolberggasse in Vienna, which fitted the format of an 8×10” large-format negative. In addition to the objects, such as toothbrushes, books or paper clips, the artist’s hands can always be seen holding the objects in position. A selection of these photograms will fill the large wall in the foyer of Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. Two further photographic works will complement Sophie Thun’s presentation.
In Thun’s works, the artistic process of photographing and exposing in the darkroom, but also the artist herself as the creator, are always prominently placed at the center and captured in the image as performative acts. Sophie Thun works primarily with analog photography techniques, their temporalities, spaces and processes, production and exhibition conditions. She studied at the Academies of Fine Arts in Krakow and Vienna, is a board member of the Secession, Association of Fine Artists, Vienna, and works at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
IM FOYER: Sophie Thun. Stolberggasse zu Friedrichstraße zu Grabbeplatz is the seventh project of Kunsthalle Düsseldorf’s IM FOYER series, which began in October 2019, and will take place in 2024 as part of the Biennale for Visual and Sonic Media – düsseldorf photo+.
