THE DELICATE GLOW
On Peacocks and Mother of Pearl in Art Nouveau
25 September 2015 – 17 January 2016

The Delicate Glow //
With its gorgeous, iridescent plumage and long, sweeping feather train, the peacock was beloved of Jugendstil/Art Nouveau artists. The glimmering rainbow colours and delicate shine of rare mother of pearl also inspired artists of the period. The exhibition "The Delicate Glow" celebrates the beauty of Jugendstil/Art Nouveau and will exhibit over 100 objects that illustrate the joyful variety of the peacock motif and the use of mother of pearl. Paintings, watercolours, jewellery, fashion accessories, posters and unique pieces of furniture present the Jugendstil/Art Nouveau artists as masters of this surface decoration, with a sense of the sumptuous and precious.
“The Delicate Glow” is also an homage to the Kunsthalle Mannheim's inaugural exhibition in 1907. Leading Jugendstil/Art Nouveau artists, such as Joseph Maria Olbrich, Peter Behrens, Koloman Moser and Leo Putz, return to the beautifully-restored Jugendstil building after more than 100 years and are joined by treasures by Eugène Feuillâtre, René Lalique and Alphonse Mucha, many loaned from international museums and private collections.
