GABI TRINKAUS
showcase: Gabi Trinkaus "FLESH"
Kunsthalle Wien public space karlsplatz,
November 10th, 2007 - June 22th, 2008
'Every [fashion] couples the living body with the inorganic world. On the living, fashion observes the rights of the corpse.' (Walter Benjamin)
One style, one size, unisex: FLESH is the surface that Gabi Trinkaus (1966, Graz) sets against the dictates of fashion, its ideal-typical forms and its identity-forming wares. In doing so the artist is just as likely to quote the meat advertisements of an arbitrarily selected supermarket chain as the scintillating icons of the fashion world.
It is less the meticulously manufactured product than its ostentatious presentation that demonstrates the veiled nakedness of the isolated body. In radically exposing latently aggressive image production, the “damaged merchandise”, the meat on the skin, queries the media manipulated body.
Exhibitions (selection): Georg Kargl Fine Arts, Vienna (2008), Galleri Andersson Sandström, Umea, Sweden (2007), BA-CA Kunstforum, Vienna (2007), Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz (2005)
